The Shop and establishment act comes under purview of department of labor and employment in India. It supervises any shop, trade or business that is carried out. This act governs and keeps a close eye on commercial establishments and also the working of the societies, printing firms, educational institutions and other premises which undertake banking, insurance, and stock or share brokerage. Under this act, every eligible establishment is provided a shop and establishment certificate.

Shop and establishment act governs every shop and employer in which employees work. I make sure that objectives like leave policy, Deduction of wages, cleanliness, maintenance of registers are followed by a shop. This act doesn’t govern factories. factories are govern by a different act i.e. Factories act 1948. These information may vary from state to state. Let us have a look at important information required to provided to get a shop and establishment certificate-

Name of the establishment – An application for shop and establishment should clearly provide name of establishment, if any.
Address of the establishment – This information is needed by authority at state level for inspection as well as communication purpose. This information need to be validated by a proper proof like electricity bills, sale deed, lease deed and registered rent agreement etc.
Full name of the employer – As the name suggests, this information is also a mandatory information for application towards shops and establishment certificate.
Category of establishment – Category of establishment could be anything from Shop, commercial establishment, Residential hotel, Restaurant, Theatre, public amusement, Retail trade or business. This information is mandatorily required to be provided in application along with documents for shop and establishment certificate.
Nature of business – A nature of business is the basic thing a business does. It could be anything from Bank, Auto parts, Automobiles, cosmetics, Packaging, paint, Toys etc. Nature of business is an exhaustive list and a business firm has to choose category that is best suited to it.
Name of the Manager – Name of manager who is supervising establishment is needed to be provided.
Father/Husband name of owner and Manager – This information is also mandatorily required for application for shop and establishment certificate.
Total number of employees – Information need to be provided in male and female category.
Date of commencement – Application should also includes date of commencement of business, This information is needed as shop and establishment act requires one to register for certificate within 30 days of commencement of business.

Information filled above will be sent to chief inspector of the authority with relevant documents. If he/she finds information to be accurate and documents to be valid after inspection then a Shop and establishment certificate will be issued to the firm.
