PAN or Permanent account number is a ten character alphanumeric identifier issued to every tax payer in India by the Income tax department. It is one of the most important identities issued to a person in India. A PAN number is issued by the Income tax department under Indian income tax act, 1961. In the majority of the cases, it is issued to Indian citizens or Indian entities. However, it can also be issued to a foreign national subject to a valid visa. Quoting a PAN number is a mandatory requirement in most of the financial transactions.

PAN Card forms

In this article, we are going to discuss important facts related to PAN card form. For applying for a PAN card, you need to fill a permanent account number form. You would not be able to avail PAN card facility if you don’t apply for a PAN card.  For a fresh PAN application, you need to fill two types of forms available online. The two types for PAN are – Form 49 A and Form 49AA. You can download a PAN card form PDF from the official link on NSDL TIN portal.

Form 49A

Form 49A is the PAN form that is required to be filled by citizens of India or entities whose communication address is in India or registered in India. You can download a PAN card form PDF from this official link from TIN NSDL portal.

Form 49AA

Form 49AA is the form that is required to be filled by foreign citizens, Incorporated and Unincorporated entities outside India. You can download a PAN card form PDF from this link from TIN NSDL portal.

Content of PAN card form 49A

Following are the major contents of PAN card form 49A-

  • Full name
  • Abbreviation of the full name to be printed on the PAN card
  • Have you ever been known by any other name?
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth/Incorporation / Agreement / Partnership or Trust Deed / Formation of Body of Individuals / Association of Persons
  • Details of Parents
  • Address – Residence and office
  • Address for communication
  • Telephone Number and Email ID
  • Status of Applicant
  • Registration number
  • Sources of Income
  • Proof of identity, proof of address and proof of address

Instructions to fill Form 49A

PAN card form 49A is an PAN application form that is required to be filled by Indian citizens or entities incorporated in India. Let us look at content of PAN card form 49A-

  • Area Code, Assessing officer code and assessing officer code. This information is need to be entered by your assessing officer
  • Full name is also required to be entered in Form 49A. You should enter Full name that is mentioned in proof of identity or proof of address that you would be supplementing with application form
  • If you want to enter abbreviations for your name to be printed in your PAN card then you could enter the same in form 49A
  • If you are known by any other name that is different from your current name than you can enter full other name
  • You would need to enter Gender (in case of applicant) or Date of Birth/Incorporation/Agreement/Partnership or Trust Deed/ Formation of Body of individuals or Association of Persons
  • Details of parents need to be entered in PAN form 49A. You can add either father’s name or mother’s name in PAN card form. You also have the option to select which parent’s name that you want to show in your final PAN card.
  • You would also be required to enter residence address as well as office address in application form. In address detail in form 49A, following information would be required to be entered in block letters – Flat / Room / Door / Block No, Name of Premises / Building / Village, Road / Street / Lane/Post Office, Area / Locality / Taluka/ Sub- Division, Town / City / District, State / Union Territory, Pin code
  • You can choose an address of communication for either office address and residence address. Address of communication is required for any other further communication including delivery of the final physical copy of the PAN card. It is advisable to choose a residence address as your communication address.
  • Telephone address and Email ID are required to be entered in form 49A. Kindly enter your main email ID in this field as you would receive electronic communication from Income tax authorities on this Email ID. If you choose any other email ID which you don’t use then you could miss important information related to PAN card forms.
  • Form 49A has also got a section for status of applicant. If you are an Individual then kindly check “Individual” checkbox
  • If you are an individual, you should avoid registration number required to be filled by corporate entities
  • You would also be required to fill in the source of income in the TIN NSDL PAN form. You can enter the “Salary” box, if you are salaried.
  • You would be required to fill details of documents that you are attaching as Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA) and Proof of Date of birth (POB) in PAN form.
  • Finally, you would be required to sign a declaration that all information that you have entered in Form 49A is correct.
  • Finally, put signature, date and place of filling form 49A

Things to remember while filling PAN form 49A

  • Form 49A should be filled in English and only in block letters.
  • Form 49A should be filled only with black ink
  • You should download the PAN card form PDF from here and practice to fill in the block letter first.
  • Take care to enter only one character in one block and do not put any cross or cutting in any block. If you have put any cutting in PAN form then you should download PAN card form PDF again and fill it again
  • TIN NSDL mandates two recent color photographs to be attached in application form. Photographs should be in white background (size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm). Kindly take care that photographs are not older than 3 months
  • You should also put a signature and a left hand thumb impression across photograph
  • Signature/Left hand thumb impression should be within box on right hand side of TIN NSDL form
  • Before putting thumb impression on Form 49A, take note that thumb impression should be attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer under official seal and stamp
  • AO code and other information related to assessing officers should also be filled by the applicant himself.
  • Kindly do not use any abbreviation in filling your name in PAN form. For example, if your name is Jatin Kumar Gupta then don’t enter JK Gupta or Jatin Gupta. Enter full name as Jatin Kumar Gupta in Form 49A
  • If you are applying for a fresh PAN for a corporate entity then enter the complete name of the entity as mentioned in the registration certificate which includes brackets also. For e.g. if your firm’s name is XYZ CORPORATION (INDIA) PRIVATE LIMITED then enter it at is including brackets too
  • Date should be entered in DD/MM/YYYY format in Form 49A. You should enter following dates for respective individuals and entities. Individual – Date of Birth, Company: Date of Incorporation, Association of Persons: Date of formation/ creation, Trusts: Date of creation of Trust Deed, Partnership Firms: Date of Partnership Deed, LLPs: Date
    of Incorporation/Registration
  • Entering Mother’s name in PAN form is not mandatory. However, if your mother is a single parent then entering mother’s name is mandatory
  • If you are not a Individual, AOP, BOI, AJP then you are not required to enter a residential address in form 49A
  • For Firm, LLP, Company, Local Authority and Trust, entering full name of office address and office address is required to be entered compulsorily. For these entities, office address would be communication address
  • You need to enter country code, STD code for a fixed line phone number
  • If you want to receive update for your PAN card status on SMS then you should enter your mobile phone number
  • If you are a Limited partnership firm then chose “Entity” under status
  • You should be careful to enter proof of identity, proof of address, proof of date of birth in applicant’s name

Form 49A fee

For getting a physical PAN at your communication address then you would need to pay Rs 107 if your communication address is in India. However, if your communication address is outside India then you would need to pay Rs 910 with PAN application form to get a physical copy of PAN card

Similarly, If a physical PAN card is not required then you would be required to pay Rs 72 along with PAN application form. In this case, you would be required to mention your email ID in PAN application form to get a PAN card in your mail id.

Content of form 49AA

Form 49AA is the form that is required to be filled by foreign citizens, Incorporated and Unincorporated entities outside India. Let us look at different information that is required to be entered in PAN application form-

  • Full name
  • Abbreviation of the full name to be printed on the PAN card
  • Have you ever been known by any other name?
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth/Incorporation / Agreement / Partnership or Trust Deed / Formation of Body of Individuals / Association of Persons
