TIN NSDL – Introduction

In this article, we would perform a detailed tour of TIN NSDL portal. TIN stands for tax information network which is an initiative by the Income Tax department or the modernization of the current system for collection, processing, monitoring and accounting of direct taxes using information technology. TIN has been established by NSDL e-governance infrastructure limited on behalf of the Income Tax department.

TIN NSDL portal has been divided into various important sections depending upon the usefulness of the sections. Main section of TIN NSDL portal includes-

TIN NSDL Services

This is the most important section in TIN NSDL portal. NSDL TIN website offers many services which includes TAN, PAN, Form 24G related services. Let us look at different subsections in TIN NSDL services section-

  1. E-TDS/E-TCS – Entities make payments to other parties in a regular interval. During these payments, it is necessary under law to deduct tax at source. These entities need to submit this TDS at designated branches authorized to collect TDS
  2. Annual information return (AIR) – Annual information return is an annual return that is required to be filed for “high value transactions”. AIR needs to be filed before 15th August of the following year. TIN NSDL also provides various forms on AIR like Part A of form 61A, Manual etc.
  3. TAN – TAN or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10 digit alphanumeric number that is required to be obtained by individuals or firms that deduct or collect tax at source. Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for such institutions to obtain a TAN. Structure of a TAN has been regularly modified by the Income Tax department in regular intervals. NSDL TIN portal also contains application for issuance of new TAN ( Form 49B) and form for change or correction in PAN data. Portal also helps applicants in how to apply for a new TAN, How you can get a TAN form, How to track TAN status, TAN fees etc.
  4. PAN – Portal also provides various links and information on how to apply for a fresh PAN, update existing PAN, modify details on an existing PAN. PAN is a 10 digit alphanumeric number that is required to perform various financial transactions or file income tax returns. In this section on TIN NSDL portal, you would be provided information regarding issuance of a fresh PAN by citizens of India, foreign nationals etc. You would also get information on reprint of PAN and modification of details in PAN
  5. OLTAS – OLTAS stands for online tax accounting system. It is an initiative undertaken by income tax department to maintain records of taxes paid through online upload of challan by banks
  6. E-Payment/Pay taxes online – Under this section NSDL TIN portal allows taxpayers to pay taxes online. If you click on the link you would be taken to a separate portal where different options are provided under TDS and Non TDS section. From this link, you would be able to pay advance tax, self assessment tax, securities transaction taxes, Gift tax etc.
  7. E – Return intermediary – Income Tax department has launched a scheme titled “Electronic Furnishing of Return of Income Scheme, 2007” enables authorized intermediaries to electronically file Income Tax returns on behalf of the taxpayers. Under this section, you would be able to get information related to E – Return intermediary service offered by Income Tax department
  8. Online PAN verification – Income Tax department has launched this service to allow registered entities to verify PAN details of tax payers. This service is maintained by NSDL E-Governance infrastructure limited. Major entities that can use this PAN verification service on TIN NSDL portal includes Banks, NBFC, Housing finance companies, Insurance company, KYC registration agency, GSTN, Payments bank etc. A complete list of entities authorized by the income tax department to verify PAN through this service can be gathered from this link. You can perform online PAN verification by 3 methods which are screen based verification, file and screen based verification, API based PAN verification. Post PAN verification, verifier can get various PAN verification status which includes whether PAN is valid, invalid or fake
  9. Form 24G – Under Income Tax notifications, Form 24G is required to be filed by payment and accounts office/district treasury office
  10. Online AIN registration – AIN stands for account office identification number. It is mandatory to have AIN for filing a Form 24G
  11. Status of tax refunds – On this section, users get information related to tax refunds in India. Tax refund is sent in following two modes RTGS?NECS and paper cheque
  12. TDS on payment to residents – This section includes information related to TDS applicable for a professional and contractors etc. You would also receive more information related to Deductor and deductee.
  13. Challan status enquiry – Under this section, you would get links from where you can get OLTAS Challan status enquiry. For taxpayers you would get two types of views i.e. CIN based view and TAN based view on TIN NSDL portal. You can check OLTAS challan status on this link.
  14. TDS on sale of property – As you already know that there is a tax paid for sale of property in India. Purchasers need to deduct tax deducted at source and submit it to a bank that is authorized by the income tax department. TDS is applicable on sale of immovable properties that exceeds value greater than 50 lakhs. There are two categories of TDS on property in India 1% and .75%. There are several points that are required to be remembered by both seller and purchaser of an immovable property whose value is greater than 50 lakhs.
  15. Equalization levy – Equalization levy was introduced in 2016 and it is imposed on digital transactions on uniform rate of 6%
  16. TDS on rent of property – TDS on rental property is needed to be charged on total rent. TDS on rent is either 5% or 3.75%. and need to be deducted by the tenant before paying rent to the landlord.
